Announcements for Sunday, Aug. 19

Service Notes

Speaking Today – Larry Burke is Africa Director for Faith Comes by Hearing, an organization that spreads the Word of God through recordings done in native languages. Larry, who grew up at West Side, and his wife Dianne previously spent 20 years with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Chad, translating the New Testament into the language of the Dangaleat people. They also helped develop a writing system for a formerly unwritten language and crafted oral Bible stories for a dozen languages.

Assisting in Worship – Christina Hjort is the MOPS Hospitality Coordinator and West Side’s Project Coordinator.

Evening Worship Today @ 5pm

40 Vacation Bible School Shirts are still AWOL!

We want them to reappear. If you have one, please return it (washed) to the church office. No questions asked. Thanks!

New Small Group: Wilderness Adventures

Ron Rice is leading this adventurous new group and starts Saturday, September 8 with the Tolmie Peak Lookout hike, one of his favorites, in Mt. Rainier National Park. Glory and prayer will be given to God for the beautiful lakes, breath taking views and alpine meadows He created that make this 6.4 mile (1100 ft. elevation gain) so outstanding. Bring food, plenty of water and sturdy shoes. Carpools leave from church. Weather permitting. Call Ron (206-932-6129) to sign up.

Parking Space Needed

Missionary friends of Don and Martha Wilson are returning to Black Forest Academy in Germany on August 22 and need a place to park/store their 1998 Toyota Sienna. The vehicle may be also be driven if additional insurance is purchased (the owners will only have minimal coverage). Length of time the space is needed can be worked out. Contact the Wilsons.

Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) Classes

Classes for men, women and young adults resume the second week in September at various locations. Join West Siders and other friends for the Old Testament study “People of the Promised Land” (Joshua, Ruth, I & II Samuel and part of Psalms and Proverbs). Class locations and times can be found on our website, www.wspc.org, or at the Welcome Center.

Next Sunday, August 26 at West Side

Foster Kids Backpack Blessing – August 26 is the last day of our Foster Kids School Supplies drive (list of needs still available in Welcome Center). We will cover the backpacks with prayer and send them along to the students. The backpack blessing for West Side’s children will be after the school year begins.

Be a Reading Partner – Alexis Acciani from the literacy non-profit Reading Partners Seattle will tell us how we can, just by committing a minimum of 1 hour per week as a tutor, double the learning rate of a struggling elementary student at Highland Park or Sanislo Elementary. Materials, support, and lesson plans provided; no experience required. Sign up after worship or contact Dick Ramsey RLRamz1@live.com or Alexis alexis.acciani@readingpartners.org.

Sunday Education @ 9am

All are invited. There is a play area in the corner of Howell for children.

Today: Dr. Larry and Dianne Burke will tell of their recent trip to Chad and Larry’s new assignment as Africa Director of Faith Comes By Hearing, a Wycliffe-related organization working with oral Bible translations for non-literary peoples.

August 26: Video Series: Walking with God in the Desert, a new set of films in That the World May Know series, will continue through September. We have used these outstanding films over the years as each new series has been released. Filmed in Israel, Egypt and South Sinai, renowned teacher and historian Ray Vander Laun illuminates the historical, geographical and cultural context of the land of the Bible and then draws spiritual application. Each film is self-contained, so be sure to come even if you have to miss a Sunday or two.
