Dear West Side family —
David and I continually thank God for the gift of his call to this congregation! The weekend of October 12-14 was a joy, and leading the adult education classes at 9am through November 4 is a privilege. How encouraging was it to have a full room of people ready to rediscover the Old Testament?! You all are so welcoming and I am grateful. I’m also taking advantage of these intervening Sundays before we begin in worship together to visit other congregations in West Seattle for their Sunday morning services. There is a lot to learn in mission together in our city – I’m grateful for this time to become familiar with other churches before I join in at West Side.
David and I are eagerly anticipating joining you all in January. In the meantime, I am completing a full teaching schedule this fall at Seattle Pacific University and Fuller Theological Seminary Northwest. We are also finalizing arrangements to move to West Seattle in early January (prayers appreciated), so are busily at work bringing our many commitments and connections at University Presbyterian Church to a good close. One very special event for us is the dedication near All Saints Day of the Solid Rock Memorial Garden at UPC — a project started 6 years ago by the family and friends of David’s late wife, Madeleine, in memory and hope. UPC is a church family that has embraced David and I through both our devastating and our joyful events — it is a grace to be joining a congregation here at West Side that does the same for one another. At the end of the month (Thanksgiving weekend) during Sunday morning worship, the congregation will commission us for this new season at West Side. December we take a long-planned trip to visit New Zealand, returning in time to celebrate Christmas with our kids and extended family.
In the meantime, I pray daily for you, with particular thanks for the staff and Session / Deacon leadership who serve this church with love and faithfulness. Aren’t we blessed to have Pastor Keith Tanis willing to remain through December?! Please pray for David and me — that we entrust ourselves wholeheartedly to Jesus’ good work, preparing us to serve him together with you.
Love in Christ,
