Lent Workbook

For Connect Groups and Spiritual Friends

Pastor Laurie has redesigned our Sermon Guides for Lent with a weekly rhythm that invites Jesus to teach us from the Gospel text in many ways — through Reading and Prayer, Rest and Worship, Practice and Reflection — and of course discussion in Connect Groups and Spiritual Friendships. Our hope this Lent is that our faith is encouraged and challenged by this focused time — and our lives transformed as followers of Jesus.

WHEN DOES LENT START?

Officially on Ash Wednesday (February 17). Laurie will post a brief video each morning during the first week of Lent (Thursday, February 18 - Wednesday, February 22) to introduce you to the devotional exercise for that day. You can find those videos on our YouTube channel.

HOW DOES THE WORKBOOK ACTUALLY WORK?

The "work" is a partnership between you and the Holy Spirit! Instead of different readings every day, our workbook approaches the same Bible passages differently every day. One day there is individual study (READ) — on another day we PRAY the passage, or REST in the good news, or WORSHIP together online. There are also days devoted to a PRACTICE to help us live into the God's word, GATHER with others in Connect Groups / Spiritual Friendships for discussion and of course a day to REFLECT on how God is at work in our lives.

DOES THIS FOLLOW A PRESCRIBED ORDER?

There is a suggested order based on groups that meet either on Sundays or Wednesdays — but many groups Connect on other days. Only two of the days are specific — READ should happen on Thursday or Friday before worship so that you have spent some time listening for Jesus' invitation in the Bible story before Pastor Laurie preaches it on Sunday. And of course WORSHIP is intended for the Sunday service. Other than that your Connect Group or Spiritual Friend can settle on an order that makes sense based on when you gather.

HOW MUCH TIME DOES THIS TAKE EVERY DAY?

A 20-30 minute time window is sufficient on the days for READ, PRAY, PRACTICE, REFLECT — though of course you can spend more time! WORSHIP and GATHER happen online in the normal times we spend at worship or in Connect Groups. And REST — well that is all day! All told, if your days do not already include space for devotions, this adds about 2 hours a week.
