Ron grew up at West Side and was ordained here in 1962. He is a 1954 graduate of West Seattle H.S., and has degrees from Whitworth University (B.A.), Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div.) and San Francisco Theological Seminary (D.Min.). He has served as youth pastor at First Presbyterian of Bellevue, chaplain at Whitworth, senior pastor at First Presbyterian of Centralia, WA, and has been on the West Side staff since 1989.
He and his wife Sharon were married in 1960 and have 3 children, the Rev. Bev Swayze, co-pastor of Covenant Presbyterian in Manassas, VA, son Tim Rice in Kirkland and Lisette Alicandro in Seattle. They have 6 grandchildren.
Ron has a major ministry in Nigeria and spends a month there each year, 19 trips so far. He and his partner, Ayuba Gufwan, crippled with polio, have their own shop in Jos, Nigeria with 25 employees, where they build self-pedaled “tricycles” for some of the tens of thousands of children and adults, crippled by polio, who spend their lives crawling on the ground. They have built and donated over 6000 wheelchairs, far more than anyone else is doing for polio survivors in all of Nigeria. You can watch a short video at www.wheelchairsfornigeria.org.
