This Beautiful Burden

Jesus took on every one of the burdens of sin in this world to the cross: the burden of sin, the burden of suffering, the burden of daily living, the burden of injustice, the burden of shame, the burden of love. God’s Son Jesus carried every burden through to the victory of the resurrection. The cross, which is a symbol of shame, violence and death in Rome, becomes a beautiful expression of the forgiveness, comfort and life in Jesus.  

As followers of Jesus we are called to carry the cross – this beautiful burden – with faith, hope, love and dignity as Jesus’ life in us transforms the burdens of this age with the beauty of the age to come. In Christ we discover that the burdens of sin and suffering of this life are preparing in us an eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4:17). Our prayer this Lent is that through reflections on the Bible God will encourage your endurance as Jesus bears your burdens in and with you – emotionally, mentally and spiritually living in you.

We are encouraging each other in a Bible Reading Discipline this Lent by using the same Student Version of the Seeing Jesus Together Journals that our High School students are following. You can pick up your copy of the journal at the Welcome Center on a Sunday.

In conjunction with the Lent sermon series, The Beautiful Burden, West Side is offering a Sunday pre-game gathering in Howell Auditorium. It is designed to include all ages and will feature story telling, questions, prayer, and (wait for it) food. Each week will highlight the morning’s Scripture and sermon theme.
