Confirmation Class is Back!

By Stacy Kutz
Families and Youth Director
After a COVID hiatus, we are excited to offer a Confirmation Class for youth once again this year!

Wednesdays, 4:00-5:30pm, March 1 through April 12
Confirmation Sunday, May 21

The GOAL of confirmation is for youth to be rooted and grounded in their faith in Jesus Christ. Our desire is for them to have a language of faith and be able to articulate and claim their beliefs.

Confirmation is:

  • Asking questions & grappling with ideas.
  • Engaging in what it means to have faith in something beyond ourselves.
  • Providing students with a coherent system of thought that equips them to confidently interpret the world and their experiences through a biblical framework.
  • Nurturing a love for and understanding of the essential doctrines of the Christian faith.
  • Laying deep and strong biblical foundations for a lifetime of faith.
  • An opportunity to explore and think about their faith in new ways.

Using The New City Catechism curriculum, these classes will emphasize the foundations of the Christian faith, the Presbyterian Church USA's tradition in the Bible, theology and prayer, while offering our youth the opportunity to voice their questions, thoughts and own insights into faith formation. Pastor Chris and I will take turns leading class sessions.

Faith Advocates:

Each student will choose an adult advocate in our West Side Presbyterian community to come alongside them on their journey of faith. Parents may help their youth choose an advocate or I am happy to match them with a person I think would be a good fit. The student and advocate will meet one on one, two times over the course of the class to have casual conversations about faith and life. The ideal is for this relationship to continue, intentionally meeting once a year until the youth graduates high school.

Statement of Faith:

Each student will write their own faith statement, sharing their personal thoughts and beliefs on God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the church and other aspects of their faith identity.

Elder Partnership:

Students will “pair up” with an elder to share their statements of faith and be received for Confirmation.
